Justin 2008 Isosceles Rating: AG Staff: 95 Points Justin's iconic Bordeaux blend was always the dream concept of Justin and Deborah Baldwin, in the model of the great Bordeaux left-bank wines of Pauillac and Margaux. Over 20 years of experience have helped guide them to great vineyards and low yields, and to spare no expense on production equipment and French barrels, to make the finest wine of Paso Robles. Yet every vintage provides new challenges, and new attempts to drive excellence in a age worthy but immediately delicious blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot.
The 2008 growing season in Paso Robles began with a wet winter dropping close to record rainfall. February warmed up quickly, prompting bud break in early March; earlier than usual. Dramatic changes in weather resulted in "shatter" berry set, reducing natural yields up to 50%. Harvest was very light, with yields 70% lower than normal. Harvest took place from early September through early November, depending on the micro-climate of the vineyard.
About the 2008 Isosceles: If you have been a follower of Justin's Isosceles (the 2008 a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet France, and 21% Merlot) you will have no problem believing that Justin kept their best lots for this outstanding wine. It reveals a dazzling bouquet of smoky, jammy, black and red fruit complemented by spicy oak. This superbly concentrated, young, marvelously extracted and large-scaled wine cuts a deep swath across the palate. The tannin is sweet and ripe, and the wine's acidity provides focus to its generous components. This dazzling proprietary red wine should age effortlessly for up to two decades and is quite possibly (along with the 2007 and 1997) the finest Isosceles produced at this highly regarded property located in the foothills of Paso's "West Side". Appellation: Paso Robles
